Protocol

Method: dense optical flow (Farneback) → vertical chest displacement → detrend + Hann window + FFT, search band 5–60 breaths/min
Refusal rules (fail-closed): unknown fps / ROI out of frame / recording under 10 seconds → no number
Quality metric status: Our first automatic quality threshold (SNR ≥ 3.0) did not survive contact with real footage — see the control-ROI data below. SNR is now advisory only; the deciding check is two blinded human counts (±3 breaths/min), not yet performed.

11 stock clips downloaded for evaluation; 1 admitted to the proof-of-concept so far (Pexels 9581318, fixed camera, 196 s). Evaluation of the remainder: Validation in progress.

What changed: A wall scored SNR 198.1 — 4.9× the dog. Three control points suggested separation; the fifth destroyed it. This is why SNR no longer gates anything.
